The problem

After the 2011 edition of the Roland Garros, Tennis Grand Slam we wanted to create a picture gallery that would contain all the pictures taken at that event. We also didn't wan't to crop or resize the pictures, as we wanted to show them at their best level of detail, also presenting the user to various information regarding its content author, subject, description etc.

The solution

For starters we gathered all the pictures from the tournament that we could put our hands on. Mostly from flickr users that consented their use in our application. All in all about 2Gbytes, and over 1000 photos, that we started processing with the Deep Zoom libraries.

In the client Silverlight we embedded various metadata that were made available either by the users or by the flickr API.

The end result was 4Gbytes of files used to recreate the smooth experience and high level of detail offered to the end user, in one of the largest picture gallery from the event.
