Microsoft Student Partners (MSP) is one of the most important technology student communites arround the world, with over 2800 members from 101 countries. In Romania StudentClub.ro is the home of all Microsft Student Partners and the place where they interact with fellow coleagues pasionate about the latest, most sophisticated technology.
Among other responsibilities, Microsoft Student Partners are in charge of organizing various technology related events in their universities. Over 100 presentations, seminars and laboratories are planned and hosted every semester. Special consideration needs to be given to the selection of the appropriate candidates, seating arrangements and resource planning.
With such a high number of events and with all the complex tasks MSPs faced to organize just one event, there was a clear need for a unified platform that would simplify this process for everyone involved, both MSPs and students that wanted to attend.
Since the very begining we chose to create from ground level the entire platform that will host the events. This approach allowed us to be very flexible in the architecture of the application with respect to client functional and performance requirements. The multitude of custom fields and non-standard features prevented us from using any existing open source development platform.
The number of events hosted on the platform may vary greatly during the school semesters. We may have weeks with ten or more hosted events, or none at all. One of the main calendar feature we developed was the ability to dynamicaly arrange and scale the time period the events that are displayed, in order to best accomodate the most important events in the time period examined.
After two years from its launch, the platform is still in use and proudly hosts events from academic centers all over Romania.
